How brands can measure visibility in AI search

More buyers now get their first answer from an AI summary rather than a list of links. Classic rank tracking doesn’t see any of it. Here is a practical way to measure where you stand.

The gap in the old metrics

Rank tracking tells you where a page sits in Google’s classic results. It says nothing about whether AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini mention your business when someone asks about your category — and that is increasingly where the research starts. You can rank third for a term and still be absent from the answer most people actually read.

What “visibility” means here

Three things, in order of value: are you named in the answer at all; are you cited with a link the reader can follow; and is what the model says about you accurate. A fourth question sits underneath all of them — which competitors show up when you don’t.

A framework you can run

  • Build a question set. The 30–50 questions a real buyer asks before they contact you. Pull them from sales calls, Search Console queries and the “People also ask” box — not from a keyword tool.
  • Ask the engines on a schedule. Run the set through each answer engine monthly. For every question, record whether you were named, linked, quoted or absent; which competitors appeared; and any factual errors.
  • Score it simply. A presence / citation / accuracy tally per question, tracked month over month. The trend matters more than the absolute number.
  • Map citations back to pages. The pages that get quoted tend to load fast, answer the question in the first paragraph, and state facts plainly. Knowing which of your pages the models trust tells you which ones to build on.

What to do with the data

Fix the pages that should be cited and aren’t. Correct factual errors at the source — your own site first, then the third-party profiles and directories the models lean on. Add the structured, entity-clear content that makes a page safe to quote.

An honest caveat

This is early. The engines change how they answer often, and there is no official ranking API — every measurement is a sample, not a certainty. Treat the numbers as directional, review them each quarter, and don’t pour budget into AI visibility before the classic search fundamentals are in place. The same things that make a page rank are what make it quotable.

A perspective piece, not a promise of results. If you want this applied to your own account, that’s part of the audit.
